The subject was begun in September 1829 although not completed until mid 1831, in time for Part III of English Landscape Scenery. The viewpoint is Flatford Lane looking across the grounds of of West Lodge to Langham and Stratford St Mary Church. It is taken from ‘Mrs Robert’s lawn’ across the street from Constable’s house. Mrs Roberts observed that she always thought of Constable ‘at the setting sun thro her trees’.
