Final state before publishing.The painting, on which this engraving is thought to be based, only came to light in 1982. Sketches made by Constable during his visit to Salisbury in 1829 would also have been referred to. In December 1830, in a ‘Draft Arrangement’, Constable listed this work for inclusion in Part III of English Landscape Scenery. However he changed his mind and although he decided that it should appear in The Proposed Appendix to English Landscape Scenery it remained unpublished until issued in 1838 by F.G. Moon. It is of great rarity and even the published state was described by Lucas as ‘exceeding rare and not to be obtained’.
