Biography
Larry Poons is an abstract painter, originally born in Tokyo, Japan. From 1955 to 1957, the artist studied music at the New England Conservatory of Music and later enrolled at the School of the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston. He taught at the Art Students League of New York from 1966 until 1970 and returned to teach there in 1997. Poons is best known for his lyrical colour paintings first exhibited at the Whitney Museum of American Art and the Museum of Modern Art in New York in the mid-1960s. His paintings are currently in the collections of many major museums, including the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York; Los Angeles County Museum of Art; the Chicago Art Institute; the Philadelphia Museum of Art; and Tate in London. During the last thirty years, his art has been included in hundreds of solo and group exhibitions, including many contemporary exhibitions at major museums and galleries around the world.

1959 Views an exhibition by Barnett Newman that inspires Poons to shift his artistic practice toward painting, and he enrolls in the School of the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston
1963 Showcases his first solo exhibition
1966-70 Teaches at the Art Students League of New York
1967 Begins experimenting with drip painting techniques and looser abstract compositions, a shift away from his previous Op-Art focus
Early 1970s Begins pouring, throwing, and splashing paint onto the surface of his paintings
Late 1970s Begins building the surface of his paintings from foam, rubber, rope, and typewriter paper, causing the resulting compositions to protrude three dimensionally
1997 Teaches at the Art Students League in New York
