1923
Born in San Mateo, California on 25th June.

1944-45
Begins painting whilst recovering in hospital from a spinal injury obtained in a plane crash while serving in the US Army Air Corps.

1949
Receives a B.A. in Art from University of California, Berkeley

1950
Completes his M.A. at the University of California, Berkeley

1950-1958
Lives and works in Paris with trips to Europe, Mexico, Japan, and USA.

1959
Moves to New York and begins work on Chase Manhattan Bank Mural.

1960-1961
Lives in Paris, then in Bern during another period of hospitalization.

1961
Moves back to California and sets up a permanent home in Santa Monica.

1968
Receives an Honorary Ph.D. from the University of California, Berkeley.

1970
Establishes ‘The Litho Shop’ in Santa Monica to print and publish his own limited edition prints.

1973-1974
Lives and works primarily in Tokyo.

1975
Publication of the monograph 'Sam Francis' by Peter Selz, published by Harry N. Abrams.

1980
Elected to the Board of Trustees at the Museum of Contemporary Art, Los Angeles.

1981
Appointed Commandeur de l’Ordre des Arts et des Lettres, by the French Ministry of Culture.

1983
Establishes a larger painting studio in San Leandro, California where he paints larger murals, including one for the San Francisco Airport.

1984
Establishes Lapis Press to publish artists’ books.

1985
Completion of mural for the Wattis Rotunda in the San Francisco Museum of Art, California.

1986
Completion of ceiling mural for the Opera National, Théâtre Royal de la Monnaie, Brussels, Belgium.

1987-89
Founds the Sam Francis Medical Research Center to support the research of infectious and environmental diseases.

1992
Publication of The Prints of Sam Francis: A Catalogue Raisonné, by Connie Lembark, published by Hudson Hills Press.

1994
Receives the Distinguished Alumnus Award from the University of California, Berkeley, who also create the Sam Francis Scholarship in his honour.
Dies 4 November in Santa Monica, California.
